Deathrace is an action thriller which is set in a future in which prisons are moneymaking entities run by corporations. Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is a former race car driver who is wrongfully convicted of murder and imprisoned. In the world of Deathrace, a prisoner can earn his freedom if he wins five no-holds-barred lethal car races. Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen) is the evil prison director who is determined to profit from the televised mayhem. One of the most popular drivers is the masked Frankenstein. Frankenstein has died, but the warden wants Jensen to pose as Frankenstein for one last deadly race. She promises that Jensen will be freed if he wins the race. Jensen is aided in this cause by his head mechanic “Coach” (Ian McShane), who helps to build the armed and armored killing machine of a vehicle.
