Warren Justice (Robert Redford) is a seasoned journalist who has become trapped in the world of broadcast news and misses the field as a reporter. Sally Atwater (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a new reporter that wants to be taken seriously as a journalist but gets caught up in the machine that wants to make her into an anchorwoman. When the two meet, they fall in love. But his career is going back to the basics, while in hers, she is still learning the basics. He mentors her until she takes off and becomes "Tally" Atwater the anchorwoman. The two can never be together until she realizes the value of a relationship over her work and he values her work as a serious journalist beyond what he can teach her as her mentor.
