This film finds David Gordon (John Cusack) mourning the loss of his wife, and hoping to adopt a young boy. The boy is named Dennis (Bobby Coleman) and he thinks he is from Mars, and hides from the sun in a box. David's sister Liz (Joan Cusack) doesn't think it is a good idea to adopt the boy, but David goes ahead with it. From there it is a story of David and Dennis connecting, as David forgets about his life as a science fiction writer and starts to believe in the Martian child that he has adopted. Whether Dennis is from Mars or not, both David and Dennis learn a great deal from their experiences together.
