Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is a highly successful businessman, but success for him has come at the cost of his family and he has become a cold and dispassionate person. When Nicholas' brother Conrad (Sean Penn) offers him an interesting 48th birthday gift from a company called Consumer Recreation Services, he isn't certain what to make of it. After finally deciding to take advantage of the gift, Nicholas heads to the company's headquarters where he undergoes several tests and is told that the company will not be able to serve him. This is, however, an elaborate cover up and the game soon begins with Nicholas discovering many different clues to the real motives of the company along the way. Nicholas is soon dragged into a completely different world than the one that he knows and cannot get out, his life and his business and everything that he knows goes down with him in to the game. Will he be able to find his way out, and will he win or lose at 'The Game'?
